Depp & Cruz together again in a dark action thriller
Day Drinker · 10/10/2026

If the film manages to give genuine depth to the relationships between its leads, Day Drinker has the potential to become an atmospheric thriller driven not only by twists and action sequences, but also by the people hiding behind their secrets.
Day Drinker brings Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz together once again in the same cinematic universe, this time through a dark action thriller that uses the luxury of the Mediterranean as the backdrop for a story filled with secrets, dangerous encounters, and unexpected connections. Marc Webb, known for 500 Days of Summer and both The Amazing Spider-Man films, takes the director’s chair, while Zach Dean handles the screenplay, creating a project that combines the atmosphere of a mystery with the intensity of a crime thriller. The initial impression is that of a story in which the sunshine, luxurious decks, and carefree holiday atmosphere are merely the surface of a much darker world, where no one is necessarily who they appear to be.
At the center of the story is Lorna, played by Madelyn Cline, a bartender working on a private yacht who is struggling to cope with the loss of her partner until she encounters a mysterious passenger, portrayed by Johnny Depp. The man, known as the “day drinker” of the title, has an enigmatic past and a personality that seems to operate outside the boundaries of conventional behavior, while their encounter gradually draws them into a dangerous adventure involving a criminal figure played by Penélope Cruz. As the characters’ paths intersect, unexpected connections emerge and complicate the situation, transforming what initially appears to be a chance meeting into something far greater than a straightforward mystery. What makes this particularly interesting is that Lorna does not enter this world as a powerful professional criminal, but as someone already carrying the weight of personal loss who suddenly finds herself surrounded by people whose motives are difficult to decipher.
Depp’s return to a leading role in a major studio production is, in itself, one of the film’s most significant elements, particularly because his character appears to draw on the eccentric, ambiguous screen presence that has made the actor so recognizable, while keeping his true intentions carefully concealed. The first teaser leaves plenty of room for interpretation regarding the identity of the mysterious man, with his peculiar behavior and the film’s unusual atmosphere reinforcing the impression that the story may conceal more than a conventional game of cat and mouse. Meanwhile, Cruz’s presence adds a familiar intensity, as the Spanish actress has already demonstrated her ability to move effortlessly between charm, menace, and unpredictability, qualities that fit a character with criminal connections. The chemistry between the leads will be crucial, since a story built around hidden identities and secrets requires performances that keep the audience constantly questioning who is really in control.
One of the most interesting pieces of trivia surrounding Day Drinker is the reunion of Depp and Cruz, who previously worked together in Blow (2001), in which Cruz played Mirtha Jung, the wife of Depp’s character, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), where she appeared as Angelica opposite Jack Sparrow. Their latest collaboration moves into an entirely different cinematic setting, leaving behind pirates and the world of drug trafficking to explore power and deception in a contemporary world of luxury. Another interesting detail lies behind the scenes, as the film is produced, among others, by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, two key figures associated with the John Wick franchise, which naturally raises expectations for a thriller featuring intense action and an organized criminal underworld. Filming took place in Spain, with Tenerife among the production locations, providing the film with an authentic Mediterranean backdrop.
Day Drinker is scheduled to arrive in US theaters on March 26, 2027, with Lionsgate handling distribution, and the first teaser has already introduced the central questions without revealing the true core of the story. At this stage, Marc Webb’s greatest challenge will be to strike a balance between mystery, action, and Lorna’s personal drama, avoiding the trap of reducing the characters to mere figures caught in a complicated criminal conspiracy. The idea of someone who drinks during the day might sound straightforward, but as a title, it carries an intriguing symbolic dimension: it suggests a character who exists outside conventional social boundaries, perhaps because he is trying to escape something he cannot confront in any other way. If the film manages to make the most of this ambiguity and give genuine depth to the relationships between its leads, Day Drinker has the potential to become an atmospheric thriller driven not only by twists and action sequences, but also by the people hiding behind their secrets.
