The return I didn't expect to impress me so much

Having played all the previous Gears of War games, when I first learned about this game about a year ago, I didn't know what to expect. I can't say the graphics in the older ones had impressed me. They had their good moments for sure, but they weren't jaw-dropping. Story-wise, the game always had a great lore, but after seeing the first teasers, I was a bit on the fence. Well, that thought of mine... couldn't have been more wrong!
Gears of War: E-Day managed to surprise me more than I expected. The graphics are impressive, Unreal Engine 5 is put to good use, the sense of team is excellent, and the combat remains enjoyable, even when certain fights repeat. The effort toward more open areas shows an interesting direction, which I would like to see evolve further in future games.
