Mini Bio

Achilleas Zervas is a Greek actor who came to wider public attention through Rififi, the COSMOTE TV crime drama directed by Sotiris Tsafoulias. The series, inspired by the legendary 1992 Athens bank heist, gave Zervas his breakthrough television role, introducing him to a much wider audience as Themis, the seemingly insignificant waiter who becomes an important part of Olga's plan. But Zervas' journey to Rififi is perhaps even more remarkable than the role itself. For much of his childhood and teenage years, he struggled with stuttering and the bullying that came with it. He has described himself as the "child who was always picked on", growing up feeling isolated and often alone. He also faced rejection when he tried to pursue acting, including being turned away from drama schools because of his speech. For years, acting seemed like something he wanted desperately but was not sure he would ever be allowed to pursue professionally. His personal struggles went much deeper. In a September 2026 interview, Zervas spoke openly for the first time about some of the darkest periods of his life, revealing that he had made three suicide attempts in the past. He also spoke about periods of heavy alcohol use, describing them as part of the difficult ways in which he tried to cope with what he was going through. These experiences are not presented as a defining label, but as part of the long road he travelled before reaching the point where he could finally begin to see himself differently. That road eventually led him back to acting.Zervas had worked as a delivery driver while continuing to pursue his ambitions. He had spent years trying to find a way into the profession, often doubting whether his stutter would allow him to succeed. Then came Sotiris Tsafoulias. The director offered him the role of Themis in Rififi — a character written specifically for him. Zervas initially thought Tsafoulias was joking. Instead, the opportunity changed the direction of his life.Themis is a waiter at a pastry shop and one of the people who gradually becomes involved in Olga's plan. Quiet and seemingly insignificant, he is also the group's "invisible" informant. He listens, observes and passes information to Olga, eventually becoming an unexpected but essential part of the group. His stutter is an integral part of the character, but it is never allowed to define his intelligence, his courage or his ability to take action. The connection between actor and character is unusually close. Zervas has said that Themis was written specifically for him and that he recognized a great deal of himself in the character. In interviews, he has described the role as almost entirely connected to his own experience — the need to belong, the fear of being mocked, and above all the desire to have his voice heard. His first day on the Rififi set was consequently an emotional one. He has recalled arriving nervous, sweating and even wanting to leave because he was terrified of how audiences would react to him. Instead, the series brought him an unexpectedly warm response. Viewers began sending him messages describing how much his story had meant to them, and the person who had once spent years feeling invisible suddenly found himself being seen. There is another deeply personal dimension to that success. Zervas has spoken about his late father and the belief that he is still somehow watching what his son has achieved. He has described becoming emotional when watching footage from the Rififi premiere and imagining his father seeing him there. For someone who spent years questioning whether he would ever find his place, those moments carry a significance far beyond professional recognition.Zervas has said that one of his greatest ambitions is to become the first Greek actor with a stutter to build a sustained professional career. His goal, however, is not simply personal success. He has repeatedly spoken about wanting his own story to show other people that the difficulties they carry do not necessarily have to determine the limits of their lives. In that sense, Rififi became much more than a television debut. It became the point where a man who had spent years being told, directly or indirectly, that certain doors were not meant for him finally walked through one.And perhaps that is why Themis means so much to Zervas. The character's central need is simple: to be heard. For the actor playing him, that need carries a very real history.
