Mini Bio

Giorgos Georgopoulos is a Greek film editor, director, screenwriter and producer whose career has developed across feature films, documentaries, television, commercials and other audiovisual productions. Born in Athens in 1975, he studied Directing at the Likourgos Stavrakos School of Cinematography and Television before studying Sociology at Università Roma I “La Sapienza” in Rome and European Culture at the Hellenic Open University. He began his professional career as a film editor and subsequently expanded his work into directing and producing, particularly in television commercials, documentaries and educational television productions. His early professional background in editing became a defining part of his filmmaking approach. He has worked across fiction and documentary projects, combining editorial experience with a broader understanding of directing, cinematography and production. His credits as an editor include feature films, documentaries and short films, among them The Other Me, Entwined, In the Strange Pursuit of Laura Durand, Brazuca, Amercement and Patty Is Such a Girly Name.Georgopoulos' career as a filmmaker developed alongside his work in editing. His first feature film as director was Tungsten (2011), a black-and-white drama that established him internationally and travelled extensively through the festival circuit. The film received four awards at the 6th Cyprus International Film Festival, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Editing. It also received the Best Film award at the Transilvania International Film Festival and a Special Mention at the Festival International du Cinéma Méditerranéen de Tetouan. His documentary work includes The Outcasts (2012), a feature documentary examining the lives of women accused of witchcraft in Ghana, as well as Education for Whom (2015), filmed in Kenya. On The Outcasts, Georgopoulos was credited both for cinematography and editing, illustrating the breadth of his involvement in the filmmaking process. In 2019, he directed Not to Be Unpleasant, But We Need to Have a Serious Talk, his second feature film. The film premiered internationally at the Austin Film Festival and went on to receive significant festival recognition, including the J.F. Costopoulos Foundation Award at the 60th Thessaloniki International Film Festival. It was also recognised at the Raindance Film Festival, where it received the Film of the Festival award.Alongside his directing work, Georgopoulos continued to establish himself as an editor on a wide range of Greek productions. His editing credits include The Other Me (2016), Brazuca (2017), The Seed (2015), Goldfish (2017), Entwined (2019), Amercement (2020) and other short and feature-length projects. His work on Entwined, in particular, placed him within the team behind one of the notable Greek genre films of the period.Georgopoulos also collaborated with Tanweer Productions on the television series 17 Threads (17 Κλωστές), directed by Sotiris Tsafoulias. He served as Editor on the six-episode series, working alongside Director of Photography Claudio Bolivar and the wider creative and production team. His collaboration with the same production environment continued with The Suitcase, the 2026 feature film directed by Dimitris Papathanasis and produced by Tanweer Productions. Georgopoulos is credited as Editor, working with Production Designer Michail Samiotis, Art Director Myrto Daskaroli and Make-up Artist Katerina Varthalitou, among the film's principal creative departments. In Rififi, the COSMOTE TV crime series directed by Sotiris Tsafoulias and produced by Tanweer Productions, Georgopoulos served as Editor. He was responsible for shaping the six-episode series in the editing room, working with Tsafoulias and the production's principal creative departments, including Director of Photography Claudio Bolivar, Production Designer Michail Samiotis, Costume Designer Agis Panagiotou, Art Director Myrto Daskaroli and the sound and post-production teams.Editing is particularly central to a production such as Rififi, where the rhythm of the storytelling, the relationship between parallel events and the gradual construction of suspense depend heavily on the final assembly of the material. Georgopoulos' experience as both an editor and director brings an additional perspective to that process, allowing him to approach the material with an understanding of both the individual scene and the larger dramatic structure. His most recent feature as director is Patty Is Such a Girly Name (2025), his third feature film. Georgopoulos directed, wrote and edited the film, which follows an 18-year-old judo athlete from a remote Greek island who travels to Athens in pursuit of her Olympic dream. The film premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and was subsequently recognised at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, where it received the Finos Film Award for Best Greek Film, the Youth Jury Award for Best Feature Film and the Greek Film Critics Association Award for Best Greek Film. What distinguishes Giorgos Georgopoulos' career is the way editing and directing have remained closely connected throughout his work. Rather than following a single professional path, he has moved repeatedly between the editing room and the director's chair, working on fiction, documentary, television and commercial productions. That combination has made editing not simply one of his professional specialisations, but a fundamental part of the way he approaches cinema and storytelling. From Tungsten and Not to Be Unpleasant, But We Need to Have a Serious Talk to 17 Threads, The Suitcase and Rififi, Georgopoulos' career reflects a sustained involvement in Greek cinema and television, both behind the editing desk and as a filmmaker in his own right.
