He is best known as the creator and lead designer behind foundational hits like Altered Beast and Golden Axe. Over his career, Uchida pioneered several core mechanics—such as quick-time events (QTEs), permanent weapon pickups, and cinematic 3D camera transitions—that heavily influenced modern action-adventure games.Early Years (1987–1990s): Uchida joined Sega in 1987, starting as a software tester on After Burner. He quickly moved up to project lead, steering Team Shinobi and Sega's AM1/Wow Entertainment divisions. His first major breakthrough came with Altered Beast (1988), which became the iconic pack-in game for the Sega Genesis console in Western markets. He followed this success with the massive dark-fantasy arcade hit Golden Axe (1989).3D Evolution & International Moves (Late 1990s–2000s): Uchida spent time stationed at Sega of America, pushing the limits of the Sega Saturn hardware to create Die Hard Arcade (Dynamite Deka). The game maximized 95% of the Saturn's capacity and introduced cinematic, fluid transitions into the 3D beat 'em up genre. Sega Shanghai & Executive Roles (2002–2025): In 2002, Uchida moved to China to become the studio director and president of Sega Shanghai R&D. In this capacity, he shifted his focus from hands-on directing to overseeing and supervising development support for major Sega franchises, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Yakuza / Like a Dragon, and Persona.Academic Transition (2025–Present): After a nearly four-decade legacy at Sega, Uchida retired from the company in April 2025 to become a professor at the Okayama University of Science, passing on his decades of design knowledge to future game developers.
